Decorative Concrete Institute
Week of February 4
Well I know this is hard to believe, Bob and Lee Ann actually took some time off with close friends, Sharon and Scott Barlass on the island of Bonaire.
If you remember in past newsletters, this is the same location that we went down and helped our friends install some decorative concrete in their beautiful home.
We did something on this trip that we typically never get to do on any other trip which is NOT work. Woo Hoo an actual vacation. Like always, Scott and Sharon, thank you so much for having us at your place!
Cast-in-Place Countertop Workshop at DCI with the Concrete Countertop Institute
February 13-14-15, 2008
Jeff and Lane of CCI visited us here at Decorative Concrete Institute and helped teach our Cast-in-Place Countertop Class. This was a fun class with very motivated students. During this class the students learned important considerations such as proper sub base preparation, reinforcing, concrete mix design and some high-end finishing techniques.
In addition to students producing very good quality cast-in-place countertops, they learned some other fun techniques such as engraved graphics, metallic epoxies and Modello stencils.
One of the students commented that after this class that they had the confidence to go out and start building their own cast-in-place tops and couldn't wait to get home and practice on their own home. All of you did a great job and keep up the good work.
Decorative Concrete Institute "Ride for the Cure 2008" Breast Cancer Benefit
Coming in June, 2008
June of this year '08, Bob and Lee Ann are going to be taking a cross country motorcycle ride leaving Atlanta on June 8 and heading North, up in to Sturgis and then in to Oregon and ultimately down the coast of California.
We figured this would be a wonderful opportunity to make this a charitable event and dedicate our ride to Bob's cousin Vicky Pezzi and close friends Taye Swing and Kalu Archambault all survivors of this terrible disease. A group of our friends and family gathered on February 17 to help shoot a short promotional video for our website. This group is pictured here in the article. Thanks to all of you for your help with this project!
Stay tuned for more on this ride and please view our short video we filmed which will be on our website and also the Concrete Network website in upcoming weeks along with information where donations can be made. Please help us make a difference!
Chemical Staining & Specialty Techniques Worishop in Santa Barbara, CA
Febrary 28-29, 2008
Bob, Lee Ann and DCI West affiliate, Mark Haen were fortunate to be invited to teach a class at Surface FX, owned and operated by Michael Rottapel. Michael figured it would be a wonderful opportunity to teach the Kemiko acid stain class since his market is growing and the demand for Acid Stains is increasing.
This was a fun class since all of the students took part in creating a masterpiece. Mike and his staff had previously installed a skim coat on his showroom floor. The skim coat was installed in the shape of a nautilus shell.
DCI demonstrated layout and saw cutting techniques along with some interesting affects using acid stains. At the conclusion of the class the students were proud to be a part of this unique project. I must say, it came out pretty cool! Thanks Michael to you and your staff. We look forward to working with you in the future.
After a busy workshop we had the pleasure of spending time with good friends Melanie Royals, Eric Meyers, Mark and Debbie Haen tasting wine in Paso Robles.
What a great day and good dinner. We look forward to this again in the near future.
